Thomas Carpe has been programming since the age of 10 when he got his first computer, a Commodore 64. In middle and high school, he helped maintain the computer labs - after the administrators figured out they couldn’t get rid of him. He worked as a computer lab monitor again in college. If he wasn’t getting paid to program computers, he’d probably be doing it for fun.Tom is a serial entrepreneur, which is a nice way of saying that not every business idea he had actually worked out. He started his first business in 1993, straight after high school. In the same year he also formed a media club. He joined Amway and built a small network of distributors – a fact which he says he is not proud of but that he learned a great deal from. In 1998, he left his full time job as a webmaster to start his own consultancy, because as he said “This is my time, and I don’t want to look back and think that I let it pass me by.” He ran CarpeDiem for over 4 years, always putting employees before himself. Though from time to time he has worked for other firms, he’s been an independent consultant for most of his 20+ years in IT. In 2005, he co-founded Colossus Consulting, and in 2009 he set out to build his own SharePoint practice, which became Liquid Mercury Solutions. Through Liquid Mercury, Thomas has built the company into a Microsoft Certified Gold Partner, which has been the case for over five years now, and he continues to play an active role in managing the practice today.
He straddles the worlds of professionalism and geekdom like few people can. He’s one part Thomas Edison and two parts Nikola Tesla. Tom is an avid reader, science fiction fan, political junkie, artist, and bicyclist. He has a voracious appetite for anime, manga, and most things Japanese – but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. He makes the yearly 2 mile pilgrimage to Otakon (and more recently BronyCon), which is held just a short distance from his home in Baltimore, and has dragged practically every family member and friend along with him. Tom raises urban chickens, known as the Hampden Hens, along with Seth and his son Eric. He’s an aficionado of microbrews and has dabbles in brewing his own beer and wine.
